I think it shows two things. Yes, we always play a tough non-conference, but we did last year and won those games. I think we were fortunate to find Brad Vachon to replace Lance Day. He has been a great number one. After that, out pitching is suspect, especially the mid-week games.
Also factor in the loss of two big offensive players to the MLB draft. Preston Beck was the big stick, but Charles Taylor would have been a freshman this year who was taken in the fourth round, one ahead of Beck. Our offense is not on the caliber it was last year. However, it is still good enough, that combined with Vachon, we are competitive in conference. All we need is a decent outing from the two and three (which has been in flux) and we take two fo three most weekends.
The trouble with losing the midweek games is that we have to win the tourney to get in. Bakersfield, the team were are tied with in first, has a chance.
