Yesterday was a really good day for UTA sports. Including in that was two wins for softball. They are 4-1 on the year. Every team they beat had higher RPI's than they did last year (220). They beat Buffalo (203) 5-3, Stetson (127) 1-0, Florida A&M (197) 1-0 and today bested South Carolina(99) 9-6. Their only loss was a 1-0 extra innings affair to host UCF (45). Against USC, four of the runs were unearned, so it looks like UTA has revived their traditionally strong pitching strength. 10 runs in four games is really quality.

Re: 2013 Softball

Can someone explain why Collins keeps getting the starts over Lyles in conference games? Lyles is 15-6 with a 1.80 ERA. The ERA is best in the WAC. She leads the staff in IP too, so it isn't a case where low starts skews the numbers. Collins, meanwhile, has an ERA of 2.31, which is third in the WAC, but is only 2-10 (soon to be 11). Against Seattle, Lyles started two of three games. But Collins started two against La Tech (we were swept) and started the first against NMSU, (we are losing 5-1 in the fifth). The doubleheader tomorrow guarantees Lyles only one start.

Is there an injury or stamina issue?

Re: 2013 Softball

Doesn't appear to be an injury issue. Lyles is now pitching in relief in a near certain loss, with the way our offense is working. Had she started, we may have been in a pitchers duel.

Re: 2013 Softball

UTA has their back against the wall in the final series. Unless they get massive help, they will need to sweep UTSA to get in the conference tourney. Standings today look like:
NMSU 16-2
San Jose 14-4
UTSA 8-10
La Tech 8-10
Seattle 8-10
Tx St 8-10
UTA 6-12
Utah St 4-14

UTA is coming off a 3-0 weekend sweep of Utah State and will play UTSA this weekend in SA. The Mavs have series wins against the USU and Seattle. They were swept by La Tech NMSU and SJSU. They lost the series to Tx St 1-2.

Louisiana Tech will play at Seattle. Ideally for UTA La Tech sweeps. If UTA wins 2 against the runners, that would leave UTA tied with Seattle and we would have the tiebreaker. I don't see them getting swept though.

Tx St visits Utah St, but even at home, the likely hood of a sweep is low. USU has won two WAC series this year against La Tech and UTSA, neither by sweep.

And in a series with no implications for us, NMSU and San Jose battle for the top seed.

UTA almost has to sweep the 'runners for the sixth seed. It can happen, we still have the best pitching staff in the WAC, but our defense and hitting have been suspect, so they will have to bring their A game this weekend.

Re: 2013 Softball

To sum up the season, I enter this into evidence.

WAC team pitching.
1) UTA ERA 1.90
2) New Mexico St ERA 2.66

WAC team batting
1) New Mexico State Avg 2.96
7) Utah St Avg .232
8) UTA Avg .222

WAC team runs scored
1) New Mexico St 253
7) Utah St 114
8) UTA 111

WAC team fielding %
1) UTSA .969
7) La Tech .955
8) UTA .954

Best pitching, worst offense, worst defense. In our sweep, we scored three times.

As an example, one extra hit and one less error and we win the San Jose State series 2-1 instead of getting swept. Terri Lyles is 20th in the entire NCAA for ERA and 44th in wins.

Callie Collins is fourth in the WAC with an ERA of 2.48.

We will need them at their best this weekend.

Re: 2013 Softball

Got what we needed on day one.

Two scenarios get the Mavericks in the conference tourney.

1) Mavs sweep UTSA. That would put our WAC record at 9-12 and theirs at 8-13. With Utah State guaranteed 8th, that would put us in the top 6.

2) The Mavs win 2 of 3 and Louisiana Tech sweeps Seattle in Washington. That would put UTA's record 8-13 and Seattle's would be 8-13. By virtue of our 2-1 series win earlier in the year, UTA would get the better seeding.

Today, UTA won their first game 4-1 over San Antonio. They have a doubleheader tomorrow.

Also, in Seattle, Louisiana Tech won both games of the doubleheader over the Redhawks.

The only drawback for UTA was Texas State's two wins. It was a possibility that UTA could have tied them in the standings. However, seeing as how the Bobcats were facing last place Utah State, that wasn't likely. Also, they own the tiebreaker, so it wouldn't change the seedings at all. So in the end, all it would really affect is half a point in the Commish Cup standings.

Updated standings going into tomorrow:
New Mexico State 16-3 35-16
San Jose State 15-4 37-15
Texas State 10-10 16-35
Louisiana Tech 10-10 25-24
UTSA 8-11 25-23
Seattle U 8-12 20-32
UT Arlington 7-12 23-25
Utah State 4-16 10-43

Re: 2013 Softball

With some good wins and a little help, UTA has made the conference tournament. They beat UTSA in the first game and coupled with a La Tech sweep of Seattle earned UTA a berth. It was needed, since UTA dropped the finale and the 'Runners avoided the sweep.

UTA plays Louisiana Tech Wednesday at 7. The tournament is hosted by La Tech, which swept UTA at the end of March, 4-1, 4-1 and 9-3.

Re: 2013 Softball

Lost their first game yesterday in a fairly familiar style, solid pitching, anemic offense, untimely defensive mistakes and lost 1-0. The sole run came from a single, then a steal, then an out that moved the runner over, then a passed ball/wild pitch.

In the Losers bracket, we face UTSA, who lost to San Jose 1-0 today.

Re: 2013 Softball

After a lightning-delayed game, UTA played the final inning today and eliminated UTSA and will face Texas State at 4:30.

We beat Tx St in non-conference play, but dropped a three game conference series 1-2 in Arlington.

Should be an even match-up, I wonder who Fix will send to the mound. Terri Lyles pitched a 0-1 loss on Wednesday six innings of shut out softball yesterday and one inning today. Callie Collins hasn't pitched yet, but it is no question the better pitcher this year is Lyles. I wonder if she considered pitching Collins for the last inning to start Lyles later. Either way, Lyles should be good to go if needed.
